To commemorate the April 4, 1968 assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., join our faculty and students Wednesday, April 4, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm as we participate in a discussion with Rev. Dr. Stephan P. McKinney, Rabbi Bennett F. Miller, and Dr. Micah L. McCreary discuss Speaking Truth to Power: Bonhoeffer and King.
About the speakers:
Dr. Stephan P. McKinney
Dr. McKinney is primarily a teaching pastor. He self-consciously stands in the activist-intellectual tradition of black preachers/pastors who embodied academic excellence, moral clarity, integrity in the pulpit, and a commitment to social justice, e.g. Vernon Johns, Samuel DeWitt Proctor, Wyatt Tee Walker, etc.
Dr. McKinney is a 1990 graduate of Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, where he was a perennial member of the Dean’s List. He is a 1994 graduate of Andover Newton Theological School in Boston, MA, where he was a Northern Baptist Education Society Scholar and a Kelsey-Owens Fellow; and a 1998 and 2002 graduate of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where he earned two additional master’s degrees. In May, 2010, Dr. McKinney took his earned Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Sociology of Religion, also from Drew University.
Dr. McKinney was ordained to Christian ministry in 1998 by the civil rights icon and Pastor Emeritus of the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, the Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker. He is a member of the Executive Committee of ABC Metro NY, currently serving as vice-president of the board. He was also a member of the 2014-15 search committee that found the current Regional Minister of ABC Metro, the Rev. Dr. Cheryl F. Dudley, the first woman to head the region in its 200-plus-year history. Dr. McKinney is a past board member of both the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association and the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance. He has preached in Africa, Europe, and throughout North America.

Rabbi Bennett F. MillerRabbi Bennett F. Miller, a native of Rochester, N.Y., is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. He earned a Master of Arts and Hebrew Letters from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati where he was ordained a Rabbi in 1974. He also earned his doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1988. In March, 1999 he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. In 2008, Rabbi Miller earned a certificate in Non-Profit Management and Fund Raising from New York University.
Rabbi Miller serves as Senior Rabbi of Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He has been associated with Anshe Emeth since 1974. Founded in 1859, Anshe Emeth is the third oldest congregation in New Jersey. Before coming to Anshe Emeth, he was the spiritual leader of Congregation Havurah in Buffalo, N.Y. and the New Jersey State Advisory Council on the Holocaust.
In October 2012, Rabbi Miller was elected to serve as the national Chair of the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA). ARZA is the Zionist arm of the Reform Movement of North America. In his capacity as Chair, Rabbi Miller represents a membership of nearly 25,000 Zionists in Reform Congregations throughout the United States. Rabbi Miller also serves on the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
