Senior Pastor – Third Reformed Church- Holland, MI
Basic Function
The Senior Pastor carries primary responsibility for the preaching and worship ministry of the
church; spiritual leadership and welfare of the congregation; and casting a vision for the future of
the church through setting the overall direction of church programs and ministries. He or she also
provides overall supervision of the church staff.
Specific Responsibilities
Among the responsibilities of the Senior Pastor are the following:
a) Serve as the primary preacher for the Sunday morning worship service.
b) In cooperation with other worship staff (director of music and other pastors), plan the
weekly worship services and special services throughout the church year, as well as
developing quarterly plans to provide overall direction for the services. The senior pastor
will have final responsibility for the design of the services.
c) Conduct or participate in baptisms, weddings, and funerals as requested.
d) Along with the consistory and church staff, provide leadership for the church through
discerning and prayerful vision, seeking to promote the development of the church and
furtherance of the gospel.
e) Preside over all meetings of the consistory and the congregation.
f) Provide pastoral care for church members in coordination with other pastoral care staff
members.
g) Provide overall supervision and empowering leadership of the staff in coordinating and
integrating the various programs into the overall ministry of the church.
h) Assume occasional teaching responsibilities in church school, adult educational
ministries, and other programs of the church.
Supervises
The Senior Pastor provides direct supervision for other pastoral staff members, the director of
music, and the church administrator.
