Message from the Dean
The bright poster caught my attention. It read, “Think Outside of the Pulpit!” Local and national headlines scream for a prepared clergy and lay leadership who can think outside of the pulpit. New Brunswick Theological Seminary helps clergy and lay leaders become world changers who think outside of the pulpit.
Theological education challenges students to “Think Outside of the Pulpit!” Pastoral ministry in its many forms is prophetic preaching, compassionate care, ethical encounters, historical honesty, courageous critiques of current conditions, justice oriented teaching and pastoral engagement with people along their journey. Preparation for pulpit ministry is a starting place, but it is not all that there is for the effective spiritual care of souls. Whether you seek ordination or intend to serve as a lay leader we can help you continue to prepare for your spiritual journey.
Seminary at its various entry points is a place to learn how to address the issues of the day in your local context and at the same time unapologetically pay attention to global events. New Brunswick Theological Seminary is where you learn to talk the talk and walk the walk. Our courses challenge your thinking. Our professors encourage you to dig deeper. Our students wrestle with ancient texts along side you. Our administrators make your education affordable and accessible. Our community makes you feel at home. Come enter a joint partnership to prepare you to be a world changer and one who thinks outside of the pulpit. Did Jesus not change the world outside of the pulpit and Jesus expects the same of us?
Allow me to invite you to come join us at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. There is a seat with your name on it waiting for you. Let us help you write the next chapter in the book that chronicles your mission and ministry.
Dean Willard Ashley
Dean of the Seminary and Associate Professor of Practical Theology
