Communications Workshops – Public Speaking: Persuasion and Argument

You are invited to participate in three communication workshops that will take place at NBTS on Saturday afternoons designed to help you along the path to becoming excellent communicators.  Many of you will take preaching courses, but public speaking is quite different. This is where you communicate with various audiences like community leaders, boards, legislative bodies, etc.  These workshops are being led by an experienced Rutgers instructor, Arete Bouhlas. The time is 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, room 115.

10/22 – Public Speaking Boot Camp: This workshop will go beyond public speaking basics to examine how to more specifically create a message for your audience. Audience analysis and listening will be discussed further, as well as using research to support your statements, ideas and arguments. Physical presentation (facial expression, body movement, etc) will be reviewed as well. Several public speeches (via Youtube) will be analyzed to assist in illustrating these concepts. Participants are encouraged to bring in speeches that they are working on, or have presented to be workshopped for improvement (either hardcopy or ecopy via laptop or tablet).

11/5 – Public Speaking: Persuasion and Argument:  This workshop will focus wholly on using argument and persuasion in the speech writing process, as well as applying solid evidence to support these claims. Several persuasive speeches will be reviewed and analyzed to assist in illustrating the concepts discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring in persuasive speeches that they are working on, or have presented to be work-shopped for improvement (either hardcopy or ecopy via laptop or tablet).

11/12 – Research Writing Argument and Analysis: This workshop will focus on crafting and sustaining an argument throughout the course of an essay or research paper. Specific focus will be given to using research and analysis in supporting argument claims. Participants are encouraged to bring in specific questions that they may have about essay/research writing, as well as papers that they are working on to be workshopped  (either hardcopy or ecopy via laptop or tablet).
